Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
