The buzz about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve with a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
