A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national projects.
